With cover art an obvious throwback to the era of Bitches Brew, instead of Miles fusing rock and jazz, we've got our new hero Fat Jon fusing hip-hop breaks and beats with jazzy interludes and soulful serenades. In the way that Wong Kar-Wei's In the Mood for Love was a tasteful, very erotic film, Wave Motion possesses a similar kind of sensual feeling to it, a feeling that can't be easily pinned down. I love these albums that, upon first listen, just have that sentiment to it, like you've grown up hearing it forever. A throwback album in that the general feeling and style is from days past, but updated for the present with some laid-back percussion and thick beats that sit comfortably in the background, letting the soulful vibes creep out like toothpaste in a tube. Bridging the gap between Thelonious Monk and the Rza, and making it work. Great samples, top-notch all around. The love-making album of the year. Stay up nights with Fat Jon in your corner and you are set. Incredible. - Absorb |
