If the early '90s are still the gold standard of soulful hip-hop production, Fat Jon's Wave Motion is like an undiscovered classic from that era. The mood is mostly mellow, even dour at times, but always leavened by the occasional fun track like "Watch Out." Fat Jon has supplied beats for some big names (Rakim, Black Starr, and his own group the Five Deez), but for his own instrumentals, the beats are cut with equal parts appreciation for Pete Rock and early 70's Stevie Wonder. It's Fat Jon's sharp ear for chord progressions and knack for crafting soulful sounds that recall past eras that keep Wave Motion out of the solipsistic, Midnight Marauders-worshipping cycle that drags down most instrumental hip-hop releases and makes this one fly by. - Grooves |
