The Mush label is probably best known for its more abstract releases such as Radioinactive and cLOUDDEAD. Fat Jon's latest walks a completely different path. Opting for the instrumental hip-hop route, he's produced some excellent laidback and smooth tracks dripping with jazz and soul. Opening with "Where?" through crackling trumpet sampling we're taken "to the sky." Not overusing samples, there's no rush as the groove effortlessly plods along. "Feel the Void" uses subtle horns and keys to a downtempo groove. In fact everything about this album leans more towards subtle melodies and beats rather that phat aggression. "Visual Music" begins with a skittering hip-hop beat till settling down with a melancholic layer of synths and samples. "For Stress" is lead by a sinister electronic bassline, again subtly placed so not to overshadow everything else going on. His use of bass on "Eyes," "Wet Secrets" and "1975" produces a real crunchy effect that echoes through your headphones. All the elements you love pieced together superbly, similar in parts to some of the Ninja Tune back catalog but maintaining his own sound and flow. One to put on after the show. 5/5 - 3D World |
