Fusions of electronica and rock music have spawned such nebulous catchphrases as post-rock and folktronica. Post-rockers can come off as overbearing and irradiate their compositions with destructive moodiness (Mogwai on occasion), while folktronica artists often lean toward untranslatable drum structures, losing listeners in percussive murkiness (Four Tet on occasion). Jared and Mike Bell, the duo behind Lymbyc Systym, skillfully combine elements with texture while maintaining aural accessibility. Their debut full-length release, Love Your Abuser (Mush), is a welcome collection of acoustic elements, sparkling melodies, and drum samples. "Truth Skull," one of Love's highlights, displays a well-constructed buildup centered around glockenspiels and breakbeats, which sounds like it could fit nicely on a Fridge album. - SF Bay Guardian |
