The album title may sound emo, but that's about the only genre that Lymbyc Systym doesn't explore. The Arizona duo uses glitchy folktronica as a base while striking off into pulsating ambience, Tortoise-indebted post-rock, luminous trip-hop, junkyard jazz and spacey pop. Jimmy Lavelle of the Album Leaf lends a hand, as do Dylan Christy of the Dylan group and other cohorts. At its best, Love Your Abuser is so alive and varied that it's easy to forget the band is instrumental. When horns and stuttering drums mingle with vibraphone to close "Astrology Days," it's a busy yet organic moment that builds and builds, only to cut to a prolonged silence. Though this could seem like channel surfing, Lymbyc Systym feels more eclectic than erratic. - Resonance |
