Who are these guys? It's the question we kept asking ourselves over and over again as we slowly fell in love with this terrific debut from Tempe, Arizona's Lymbyc Systym. Love Your Abuser is one of those amorphous instrumental records you can call electronic, post-rock, even folktronica (do they still use that term anymore?), as brothers Jared and Michael Bell take us through 10 highly enjoyable tracks of lush, soft melodies and pulsating beats that should find an audience among fans of Album Leaf, Tortoise, Bell Orchestre and M83. There's a deep emotional core to the songs, as the Bell brothers use layers of vintage keyboards, freeform drumming, spiced-up guitars, horns and loops of the Phillip Glass and Terry Riley school to give Love Your Abuser a subtle grandeur. A solid addition to the already stellar Mush catalog, Lymbyc Systym is a band to keep your eye on. For now, Love Your Abuser is an album to listen to. Like now. - Sound Fix |
