Why more people don’t talk about Daedelus is quite surprising to me - in terms of a Fout Tet with a little more hip-hop influences thrown together, he’s had the recipe for success for a few years now. And the title to this set hints at that, but what do I know- what I do know is that beat-heads who dig a bit more on the experimental, free-flowing side will dig on Demise. Also, if Casio style keys are your thing, Demise is chock full of that sound. Specifically, Demise is a nice combination of jazz samples and fast stutter-stop beats throughout. Little nuances give each track their own respective flavor, and unlike some electronica albums, this one has very steady, comfortable flow to it. Those familiar with !K7’s DJ Kicks series probably already appreciate Daedelus’s knack for crafting seguey type structures to his albums, and Demise is no different. A big complaint the casual listener will have with this, and I’m not removed, is that at times some of the vocal tracks can be rather annoying, most notably on the bossa nova heavy “Lights Out” in which a cartoonish “whehhhhhh” repetitiously keeps popping up throughout. If you’re not in the mood, you’re not in the mood. That being said, Daedelus’ is still worth checking out, even if his demise is steeped in obscurity. - Loose Record |
