Right from the start of this album you can tell that Daedalus isn't kidding around- this is seriously complex compositional music. "At My Heels(1)" sets things off with half time chopped drums rocking under a canopy of strings that constantly threaten to go completely off beat, but then reconnect just as you're about to freak out. That's one of his specialties actually. As electronic and sample-based as his music sounds, it all has an amazing hands-on quality to it. "Bahia(2)" and "Lights Out(3)" come with the Brazilian batucada and bossa influence that have been more present for Daedalus lately. "Like Clockwork Springs(4)" is some otherworldly Bmore stuff that makes me want to do the Molly Ringwald dance. Dig into the magic mushroom broken beat of "Dreamt of Drowning(5)" and savor the always underappreciated "good stomach ache" that comes with it. To conclude this flight, "Sunrise(6)" and "Viva Vida(7)" bring your ship gently back to the ground. Then as you're about to touch down you realize that the nose of the ship is actually a drill and you gladly take a ride to the center of the Earth where you can melt with a smile on your face. - Turntablelab |
