10 Seconds has SP-1200 written all over it. From the cover art and liner notes to the song titles and the sound of the beats... even the album's title. The SP-1200 is, of course, the primitive sampler famous for adding layers of grit and dirt to even to even the crispest of samples - Jel's weapon of choice. Fifty-seven minutes of instrumentals can be hard to take, but it seems like Jel made a conscious effort to try to keep things flowing. Most of the tracks are brief, some only one or two minutes long. In addition to this, the songs take many twists and turns. He's definitely not content to loop a hot bar and leave it at that, and for this we thank him. His beats are constantly changing and, in general, there's a lot going on here. - Skyscraper |
