This is a nice smooth, simple, funky record. It appears to be exactly what Jel wanted. The title 10 Seconds, as is also stated in the liner notes, comes from the sampling time allowed by the SP-1200, the machine Jel used to push out his solemn beats. The SP-1200 produces a sound that is almost like a recorded 45, snapping and crackling and just a bit primitive and old sounding and Jel takes advantage of it. There is a disarming, sitting at home, sipping some lemonade sound to 10 Seconds. Even though Jel uses some tribal beats and dangerously high keyboard octaves, along with some strange sampled conversations, this record does not jump in your face, but rather slowly creeps up your spine with the best part of hip-hop sampling you can find. This album works. - Interference |
