For months now, a friend of mine has been bugging me to check out this Jel album. Now, by association alone, I just assumed that I would hate it, so I ignored his suggestion (as per usual, much to his chagrin). But over and over again I've been hearing him bitch about how great it is, so when I got in touch with Mush, I made sure I scored a copy, in my mind, to prove him wrong. But I ended up being wrong. This Jel record is completely off the meter. First of all, it's almost a completely instrumental album. So all the Anticon haters like me can rest assured that it will be a mostly beat-aesthetic experience. and it just works. This is a straightforward, honest hip-hop album. The beats are not extravagant, and they are not simple. But they are easy to digest, and just fun to listen to. And there is hardly any bullshit filler either, each track is delicately crafted with appropriate pauses and beat arrangement. The title refers to the sampling time for the SP-1200. In a time where so much credibility comes from experimentation, in this case, the straight-forward, old faithful style of beat-making holds fast, and really shines through. I may not be a convert, but this shit needs to be checked out. - Absorb |
