Instrumental hip-hop doesn't get much better than this. Naming his album after the pathetically small sampling memory of the much-favored SP-1200 sampler, Anticon beat maestro Jel meticulously grafts beats and loops together on the hard-hitting 10 Seconds. The polar opposite to most downbeat hip-hop, Jel's tracks rock like they were cut from prog rock, the Furious Five and Tony Williams Lifetime. "Dynamic Button" stamps a dirty break and slices of rhyme into a vamping Hammond loop, while the atmospheric "...Your..." slickly slides between alternating rhythms, giving polyrhythmic DJs a run for their money. While others have long since mastered the limiting SP-1200, Jel's efforts at doing so are probably the deepest, funkiest document of said mastery. - Alternative Press |
