A little background information is necessary for a review of this album: The title 10 Seconds refers to the old school sampling of the SP-1200 (as opposed to the several minute samples heard in much of today's hip-hop) that was used to compose this multi-dimensional, thoughtful, instrumental full-length. The unit has a dirty, unpolished sound, which Anticon producer, Jel, uses to his advantage, piling fresh, sometimes random samples high onto solid hip-hop beats while surmounting the possible limitations of programmed rhythms and sampling. Elements like the almost-undetectable snippet of doo-wop of "Define Mix", the drum solo of "Channel Assign", sudden subtle changes in tempo and time signature, and various vocal samples proves that this producer hears music in the most random places and smallest of clips. While the entire album might be somewhat overwhelming to listen to in one sitting - it requires an attention span some of us are lacking - it is an impressive compilation of a beat-maker whose close attention to detail is definitely paying off. - CMJ |
