Some folks aren't even sure if cLOUDDEAD is hip-hop. On their debut album, the Bay Area trio of Doseone, why? and odd nosdam reject the propulsive nature of most hip-hop in favor of, well, a cloud based form, abstract music with agile flow. Lo-fi keyboards and rumbling beats don't frame the rhymes so much as wander along with them, occasionally accenting a particular moment. removing much of hip-hop's forward motion inherently changes the game, rendering diffuse what was once aggressive, focusing the ear to pay attention to the bizarre, whinny, intricate vocals. In its own hyper-mellow East Bay way, this stuff is Wu Tang obtrusive, dark, singsong lyrics weaving in and out of the dirty beats, leaning nowhere in particular but expanding hip-hop's aural vocabulary just the same. - Austin American Statesman |
