cLOUDDEAD are part of the infamous Bay Area based collective known as Anticon, who have established a worldwide reputation through both their music and extra curricular activist tendencies. They're also the trio behind the series of very strange, very limited ten-inch hip-hop singles that began to appear across the US and Europe late last year. Your eyes may have been drawn to their collage style photocopy artwork and grainy photos in the racks. If you took it one stage further and listened to the singles, you would have heard odd, sometimes disjointed beats laced with grime and lyrics. cLOUDDEAD's music is undeniably influenced by hip-hop, but the crew are not so much blurring as disfiguring the genre. Doseone, why? and odd nosdam's music is not going to be compared to the latest NY indie mic sensation, cLOUDDEAD are just too radical. As a rule, Doseone and why? are the crew's lyricists whilst odd nosdam produces the sounds. Rules are meant to be broken and in practice, the trio's creative dynamics are a little more fluid than the emcees/producer formula suggests. The notorious six minute long series of six ten-inch singles were recorded in true lo-fi fashion on an eight track in a variety of apartments around Cincinnati and the Bay Area last year. Mr. Dibbs, Sole, Dj Signify, Illogic and the Bay Area Animals also became involved. As Doseone puts it, all the tracks were "recorded under extreme duress - very emotional times in our lives." - Elusive Styles |
