Without opening a whole other smelly kettle of fish, lets just say that when talking about Anticon it's hard to find anyone who doesn't think that they're either just some nerdy white kids reading out philosophy books over unlistenable beats or the most creative and innovative bunch of talented lost souls out there. Let's also say that you won't have heard anything like this yet. Forget notions of hip-hop as existing within a funk-beat based aesthetic and throw on some headphones and let the myriad xylophones, tablas and deliberate distortion seep into your consciousness (and this is where the Radiohead references will probably kick in). And then someone with a voice like a scarecrow will start to speak... "Do you know how many times I've thought about writing about the paper I am writing on?" Ah yes, that would be the ubiquitous Doseone who's the undoubted star of the show. Actually, ring-leader is probably more appropriate, as he delights in toying with you via language. How much of it all is wordplay for the sake of pretension is still up for debate, but one suspects that it's your po-faced problem not his: "A wise man once said 'fuck 'em if they can't take a joke." It's likely, then, that cLOUDDEAD will find its root success in courting fans from the non-hip-hop market. But then that shouldn't really matter, not just because they probably don't care, but because, as they chorus together triumphantly: "It's all the same shit, but they call it cLOUDDEAD." - Bleed Music |
