MH-206 cLOUDDEAD - cLOUDDEAD  "It's all the same shit but they call it cLOUDDEAD." cLOUDDEAD is the avant-hip-hop grouping of Doseone, why?, and odd nosdam. Fusing abstract beats, ambient pads, and interweaving vocals, cLOUDDEAD has created a release that owes as much to the Beatles as it does to hip-hop. Like Doseone and why?'s Greenthink project, cLOUDDEAD renounces the traditional hip-hop song format in favor of music made in movements. Six such movements were created to be released as a limited edition ten-inch series. Each release features a guest (Illogic, Dj Signify, Sole, the Wolf Bros., Mr. Dibbs, and The Bay Area Animals) and focuses on a specific theme. All six are combined to create a full-length that nullifies any preconception of style and raises the artistic bar for future Mush releases. |

| This collection of ten-inch records released between 1998 and 2000 is not your run-of-the-mill hip-hop album - can you name another set that name checks William Howard Taft, the fattest US president? Comprised of Doseone, why? and odd nosdam, cLOUDDEAD are members of the avant-garde hip-hop collective Anticon, who strive to remake the genre as outsider art. Doseone and why?'s raps - streams of consciousness, lunatic ramblings, regression therapy babbles, schizophrenic doodles and impressionistic reveries - are delivered in off-the-wall cadences that don't exactly ride the beat, reinforcing the music's dreamy state. odd nosdam's production is mixed on an opiated palette of drawn out (and washed-out) synths, backwards organs, scratch squiggles, winded beats and textures that wouldn't have been out of place on the last Tortoise or Sigur Ros albums. cLOUDDEAD will not be to everyone's taste, but surrender to its drift and you'll discover a compelling and ground-breaking compilation. - Rough Guide |
