While Company Flow is most certainly a household name to anyone who has studied up on rap, or didn't have their head up their ass in the nineties; perhaps a history lesson is in store. Company Flow [EL-P, Bigg Jus, DJ Mr. Len] dropped a bomb in 1997 by the name of Funcrusher Plus. Heralded as the premier experimental rap album of the late nineties; second, perhaps, only to Dr. Octagon himself, and one of the most important albums in the underground scene, Funcrusher Plus brought up Rawkus Records, and Definitive Jux, on top of changing the definition of what rap was. A hop, skip, break up, presidential inauguration, and war later, the sun rises on Poor People's Day. On this "Day" Bigg Jus drops his intangible past and instead grabs oppression by the balls, and doesn't let go. Saturated with rhymes like, "Excuse me Miss Liberty I don't mean to be misogynistic. But put some lipstick on them green lips. 'Cuz the truth ain't a pretty bitch. In the US even Martin Luther kept a gun at the crib," and truly delectable beats which punctuate Jus's every syllable; Poor People's Day is an explosive record both musically and politically. Always informative, never pretentious, Bigg Jus is back and in a big way, and with DJ Gman by his side, let's hope he never goes away. Enjoy and inform yourself, this is one of the best albums of 2005. - IGN |
