| Atlanta-based emcee Listener is more fundamentally abstract and East Coast influenced than you might expect from the Dirty South. However, don't let his articulate flow fool you, as he's definitely representing his region to the fullest (his Southern drawl remains rightfully intact), further injecting the urban musical landscape with a much-needed dose of humility, eclecticism and intelligent introspection. On this, the mindful MC's first release, you won't find the wacky lyricism and off-pattern flow usually associated with underground hip-hop, nor will you encounter the clap-happy chit chatter and sugarcoated hooks found on commercial rap releases these days. Instead, Listener keeps his flows simple and makes his lyrics the highlight of the delivery. At times filled with convoluted intensity, always veering towards analytical contradictions, Listener is brutally honest, and his obtuse lyrics make most Down South party MCs sound even more childish than they already are. - Metro Pop |
