For some of the most memorably claustrophobic hip-hop since the Wu-Tang Clan exited the 36 Chambers, wander into the studio of Listener, an Atlanta emcee who's breaking away from Deepspace5 for his first solo album. Smart, Christian and with an affinity for eavesdropping on the audio dark side, Listener uses excursions like "FYI" and "Ways of the Wind" to recreate it, with muffled pianos and shambling beats summoning an uneasy, late-night atmosphere. His voice is the periscope above the murk, clearly articulating his philosophies; on "It's a Lonely World" he gets downright profound, confronting the vastness of the universe with a courage no playacting thug could ever manage. - Graffiti |
