I first heard Free Kamal a couple of months ago while drunk on a Friday night. I was in no mood for what I assumed was just more snooty underground hip-hop, so I quickly proceeded to say, "Man, here we go again!" I was a little surprised when I got this in the mail. This meant that I had to listen to it objectively. It would be a difficult task given the fact that I'm a hard-headed asshole and I've yelled, "turn off this fucking bullshit" more than once when referring to this album. It didn't help when the back of the CD case referred to this as "American Made Art Rap." That doesn't sound pretentious at all, does it? So here it goes. The two most striking and impressive elements on this album are Radioinactive's versatile, tongue twisting flow, and the musicality brought by producer Antimc. I'm very fucking glad this album came with the lyrics written down because I would probably still be trying to decipher what the hell he's saying. Radioinactive's warped speed flow sometimes takes away from his actual lyrics because it so goddam fast. Which is sad because his writing skills are almost as impressive as his flow. On the production side, Antimc brings an insane amount of talent to the table. The tracks on Free Kamal range from Reggae tinged ("First World Justice System"), to jazz ("Running With Scissors"), to some tribal music from some country that I'm too stupid to know the name of ("The Weight of Secrets"). So now that I took another listen, these guys aren't so fucking bad. - Fran |
