Curse ov Dialect is a five-man collective from Melbourne, Australia who express a unified message while maintaining their individuality on Lost in the Real Sky. Their politically-charged lyrics, including sentiments of anti-racism and other social issues are set to a chaotic backdrop of sonic casualties, with no stones left unturned in the sampling department. World music, breaks, Italian prog rock, soul grooves, footy commentary... they all have a place here, and the layered samples and attitude are reminiscent of early Public Enemy/Bomb Squad productions. The chopped-and-looped keys from Goblin's progressive score to Dario Argento's Deep Red (a tip for you crate diggers) immediately grab your attention on "All Cultures" while "Multicultural Markets" combines melancholy grooves with frenzied scratching. Curse are joined by a slew of their compatriots on "Family Assorted," a tempo-shifting posse cut for the ages and Vulk, the resident Macedonian of the crew fires darts at targets including Prime Minister John Howard on "Curse ov the Vulk Makedonski." The strength of their accents and speed of delivery causes some auditory difficulty on some of the busier tracks, like opener "Baby How?," but that's a minor issue in the grand scheme of things. Congratulations to Mush Records for taking a chance on this release and giving this intoxicating and inspiring multicultural hip-hop collective a global audience. - Stealth |
