Excellent atmospheric poppy Manc post punk - New Music Daily / Good stuff - A New Band A Day / All of the distortion, the fuzziness, the choppy experimental layers and personal lyrics of joy and sorrow are captured here in their original form - The 405 / This guy is gonna be one to watch out for this summer - Austin Town Hall |
This debut by Golden Glow is the work of talented English singer & songwriter Pierre Hall, previously of The Lead Balloons. The album was written and recorded on a four-track late in 2009/2010 after Hall was involved in a serious motorcycle accident which left him unable to walk for around six months. The result is a simple yet catchy, brit-pop album with plenty of charm and some dark undertones that are, at times, reminiscent of the new wave and post-punk stylings of Joy Division. The album is essentially the sound of a dark time in Hall’s life; a man isolated and housebound by his situation channelling his boredom and frustration into whatever outlet he can. The sound created and captured by Hall on Tender is the Night is curious as it was created on his four-track recorder and the resulting songs were intended to be demos. The record company were thrilled with the simple, lo-fi sound of Hall’s recordings and urged him to release them exactly as they were. Stand out tracks include "Adore Me", "Locked Inside" and "On My Own". A solid debut for Golden Glow, Hall’s talents are showcased in a great light and his skills as a songwriter can only improve. Having now selected a group of musicians to fill out the live lineup of Golden Glow, this album in a live setting would be well worth seeing. Highly recommended for fans of The Drums. - The AU Review |
