Remember the scene in Vanilla Sky where a forlorn Cameron Diaz gazes from across the room at Tom Cruise, and Penelope Cruz calls her "the saddest girl to ever hold a martini?" Well, The Young Machines could not only provide the soundtrack for that moment, they might be the musical equivalent-sophisticated, a little drunk and emotionally devastating. From "Tech Romance" where Marc Bianchi begs, "Carry me around like a picture in your purse," to the desperate "My Girlfriend's Boyfriend" Bianchi fuses intricate strings, analog keyboard gurgles and drum programming into a lush collection of ambient pop. Anyone who's followed Her Space Holiday will be heartbroken to hear that this album details the split-up of Bianchi's long-term relationship. Love, loss, despair - it's all here, embedded in dreamy drones which, without the lyrics, are buoyant enough to sound happy to anyone who's on top of the world. But listeners living through a lousy year of their own should probably just go out and get the new Andrew W.K. album, because this one's too gut wrenching. - Resonance |
