The good folks at Mush must have been in a sensitive mood when they agree to have Marc Bianchi, aka Her Space Holiday, on their label after some releases on Tigerstyle. Far from the abstract experimental hip-hop Mush is known for, Bianchi's dreamy-pop song structures and tender electro-hop symphonies are a bracing surprise.
Bianchi sets the tone immediately with the title track: swelling string glissando punctuated by drum and bass rhythms, colored by splashes of glass-sounding vibes and handclaps. The beats may not get any fancier than here, Bianchi's use of strings and acoustic instruments (piano and guitar) to accompany his vulnerable narratives about love, loss, death, and infidelity are what separate him from the lo-fi indie-rock miserablists turned closeted bedroom IDMers. And while he does use strings ironically on "Tech Romance" for the most part, he uses them wisely to carry the emotional weight of the songs that the plainspoken honesty of his voice can't support.
On first listen, it is easy to get caught up in the emotional fragility of the songs, and if you don't pay attention, you'll miss the sly barbs he throws in. - Grooves |
