"The Sound of a Handshake" begins with something sounding like a version of "Who Let The Dogs Out" on acid, with Dose's voice scratched about, progressing to a slow chanted part over an electro-beat, which eventually gives way to a slower, more electronic beat and Dose and why?'s indecipherable rapping, followed by a slightly faster end part. Nothing unusual for this band, but still exciting. But the other side is definitely what's worth hearing. "This About the City" fades in with an ambient drone, followed by computer voices saying "cLOUDDEAD," and then a fucking amazing slow beat with dazed, multi-tracked rapping over it. And all of a sudden you hear an "ow!" and think "holy fuck, is that Michael Jackson?" and then you hear "so just leave me alone!" Fucking awesome! As with any cLOUDDEAD song, it doesn't sound the same for the entire length of the vinyl side, so after a brief collage of manipulated voices, another sweet drone comes on, and another half-sung half-quickly rapped vocal part emerges. Definitely a totally great song, but the first half of it is certainly one of the best things I've ever heard anyone involved with cLOUDDEAD do. - Chester's Blanket Fort |
