cLOUDDEAD make possibly the most obscure music anybody is ever likely to hear. They are fronted by Anticon's truest poet Doseone, who is known for his "fuck hip-hop, lets art" attitude and style. This release on ten-inch wax serves as a preview of cLOUDDEAD's next album, and a proper headfuck it is. The stickers on both sides of this piece of vinyl are identical, so there's no telling which side is which, but judging by the words (there's a lyric sheet) and the image on the cover, "The Sound of a Handshake" is first. The first part of this track is a stripped-down industrial sound over a very vague break, and a build up of chanted free flow poetry. There is a brief moment of eerie singsong pop, before continuing into a more hard-hitting industrial beat and (comparatively) more obvious vocals. The track actually finishes by sounding remotely like Cannibal Ox-esque industrialized hip-hop. On the flip side, "This About the City" is more obscure still, sounding like mad and messy African-world-music. This slowly progresses to a weird, but hauntingly peaceful monk-like chorus of trademark Doseone vocals, over super-spaced beats. The vocals are near enough undecipherable, but the lyric sheet does contribute somewhat to beginning to untangle and maybe even understand the song. The term "uneasy listening" has been thrown around a bit lately, but this ten-inch pretty much defined it. This is no Moldy Peaches affair, as cLOUDDEAD are obviously not joking. This is quite possibly either inter-dimensional, otherworldly genius or complete fucking bullshit. - Dot Alt |
