I know. The artist and title of this album sounds like something I would have bought ten years ago on import from a shady metal shop. It would have featured some guest playing by Justin Broadrick or Kevin Martin, and been suitably dark, loud, and abrasive. Well, this isnt that at all. Sure, its a little melancholy, but, as youve probably noticed, most of Word is devoted to everything with a strain of melancholy on it. Blue Sky Black Death are two producers I've never heard of, but I'm thinking we should be hearing from them a lot more soon. Apparently, they started making an album, and found they had two albums, one of instrumentals and one of emcee laden tracks. So, this is a double album, divided along the instro/vocal lines, and it makes for quite a journey. Start off with the instrumentals, and find a plethora of beat heavy soundscapes that remind of you of someone we won't mention. I was listening to this today, and thinking" damn, this is super well done and just really quite ace." It screams quality all throughout. Moving on to the vocal disc, youll find Hiero, Wise Intelligent, Guru, Rob Sonic, Mike Ladd, Mikah-9, and Awol One. They join with BSBD extremely well, and make an astounding fresh album in their own right. This is one of those rare CDs that is extremely good value, getting two discs of high quality music. The instrumental disc is wholly original, not just instros of the vocals songs. Congrats to these guys for putting out something that is fresh, ambitious, and not overblown. - Word |
