Following Pedro’s (James Rutledge) self titled album in the summer of 2003, we have this tidy little mini-album featuring remixes of the track "Fear & Resilience." The original album track was a bit of a corker, a trendy slice of highbrow electronica that incorporated the use of brass horns and superb bristling beats, deliciously intertwined with strummed acoustic guitars. There are six remixes in total, and an extra, untitled track that appears to be an unrelated bonus. The mixes strip down "Fear & Resilience" to a multitude of ideas and twist them into new forms whilst always referencing the evocative original. Prefuse 73 and Cherrystones both deliver fine opening mixes that soon become just as addictively stylish as the original, whilst Danger Mouse prefers to play it safe, merely re-arranging some of the former's outlandish programming. Meanwhile, Home Skillet shoves the lot through the proverbial meat grinder. Folktronica specialist Four Tet close proceedings with a lengthy 21-minute mix, revelling in the opportunity to experiment with the more avante-garde, jazz elements of the original, although sometimes they try too hard to be remarkable and end up being a little pretentious. But, overall this remains high-grade electronic music; and the Melodic label continues to deliver a seal of quality on practically everything it releases. - Barcode |
