Virtually speaking, the indie-electronica scene is boundless, and to stand out in it stakes a solid claim about the artist's innovation and ability, since those who resemble another too closely are seemingly disregarded as unoriginal. One such artist who does this effortlessly is Riz Maslen - aka Neotropic - with her blend of bedroom electronics, drum loops and grand piano. That's right, piano, and it hasn't sounded so dreamy since you were falling asleep in music class in elementary school. Cliche you're thinking... but cliche or not, there is something about Maslen's way of putting piano into such a digital context that it lulls the listener into some kind of dreamlike haze. Or maybe it's the field recordings, angelic vocal tracks, and hums of static that loom on the edges of tracks like "Inch Inch" and "Magpies" that put the listener at bay. Either or, Maslen's latest work, White Rabbits, stands apart in the world of sound collages and experimental electronics. - 30 Music |
