Neotropic is the recording name of Riz Maslen, who seems to have her shit together when it comes to creating mellow instrumental musical pieces that shift in and out of ambience. Pianos, guitars, violins, harmonicas, glockenspiels, she's got it all. It's cute, it's cinematic, and it's downright fucking weird. Occasionally severely distorted vocals bubble to the surface, but more as a textural element than to tell a story. Careful listeners will hear the influence of Future Sound of London in these songs, with enough organic instrumentation to add an extra kick to the drum loops and droning sonic landscape. Several listens may be required to "get it," but your patience will be well rewarded. - Ghetto Blaster |
