The latest idiosyncratic signing to the ever-exciting Leaf Recordings is Australia's Clue to Kalo, sourced from US label Mush. Much hyped by cLOUDDEAD's Doseone - an endorsement if anyone needed one - Clue to Kalo, aka Mark Mitchell, has more than a lot to live up to. Fortunately, Mitchell doesn't fail to deliver. Come Here When You Sleepwalk is a wonderful sleeper (excuse the pun) of an album, Mitchell's heart-wrenching vocals drenched in dreamy hypnotic loops, warm textures and intricate studio trickery. To call Come Here When You Sleepwalk simply clever laptop music would only be half the story, as this is an album of proper songs. A lot of love has gone into the album and it oozes quality from beginning to end. Whether it be the intricate, guitar swathed, minimalism of "Empty Save the Oxygen," the insistent dub lullaby of "This Is Over By Inches" with its tingling optimism and resonating deep synths, or the merry-go-round of "We'll Live Free (in NYC)," it is hard to find fault. The aching progressive number that is "Still We Felt Bulletproof" and the uplifting "Do You Know That Love Can End?" will leave you blinking back the tears (or is that just me). By rights, Come Here When You Sleepwalk should be a sickening album of clichéd cotton wool wrapped noodlings, but instead, Mitchell has quite possibly crafted the most beautiful, intimate electronic album you'll ever hear. 5/5 - The Student Web |
