With Float, Aesop Rock has established himself at the forefront of emcees. As a lyricist, few can match up with him, and his words seem so layered that you could spend several hours trying to figure if he means one thing or the other. When hearing him speak, you get the feeling that you're dealing with someone special, perhaps because his encompassing voice sounds like an other-worldly entity speaking down. The production is excellent throughout the album. Blockhead handles his business very well, going deep into the well to search out sounds that range from murky to dark to relaxed to haunting. In fact, Aesop Rock handles a great deal of the production himself, managing to concoct sounds that compliment his style and choice of lyrics. The best thing about the whole album is how complete it is. There will always be something to hear, some quote to jot down, but in the end, the album is really just a glimpse into a creative mind. I have no qualms in calling Aesop Rock one of the most talented emcees today, because it's true. - 4th District |
