I love Open Mike Eagle. He doesn't make me feel like an old fuddy duddy fucker when I listen to his music. He isn't talking about shit I can't relate to or imagine myself relating to. He isn't talking about shit I wouldn't play around my kids or shit I wouldn't play for my kids while I let them finish sharpening my collection of sabres and swords. He isn't talking about things that are so far removed from my life that I can only pretend to understand, like being a rapper or something unprofessional likes that. No, he isn't rapping about changing diapers, bathing three kids, or trying to get said three kids to fucking sleep. But semi-mature content that adults in 2011 might find more appealing than rapping about rape, rapey rap rape, and rape flavored rapestruction. But Thirsty Fish isn't just Open Mike Eagle, no, it's a triumvirate of dry tongued wordsmiths including the lanky and delicious Dumbfoundead and Psychosiz. If you hate your mouth for not being able to rap rap really fast fast, you might experience a twinge of envy envy when breezing through Watergate. But deal with it. What isn't hip hop about this album? You can understand everything these fuckers raps. What is hip hop about this album? It's windows rolled down shit. I mean, I had all three kids in they car seats all like "woooooo, daddy, it's too windy back heres!" and then I'm all "YOU WILL DEAL WITH ITS, WE ARE BEING THE HIP HOP RIGHT NOWED! WE AREN'T LISTENING TO INTUITION FOR CHRISSAKES!" I don't have the bassy bass bass capabilities of the cars I used to drive back in high school, so as a guy who listens to music at a respectable and discernable volume now, I appreciate the production leaning more towards the trebly. It isn't shrill or tinny or anything, it just feels different than some of the shit I have to fucking blast to get the full experience of. The first five tracks on this: Sounds Like Rap, Working The Numbers, Director's Cut (feat. Swim Team), Girls Or Like and Grind It Out are fucking flawless. In fact, Grind It Out shows that Open Mike Eagle is better at getting better than Busdriver. Also, the horn is sex. Yes, sex. I plan on giving this the ol' grill treatment (playing while grilling dude, cmon brah) many times this summer. And I encourage you to go buy this over at Mush. BTW: Fuck Mush Records. ENOUGH WITH THE CONSISTENCY. YOU'RE MAKING OTHER LABELS LOOK LIKE PEWP! - SYFFAL |
