Benjamin Winn’s third album, his debut for San Fran’s weird hoppers Mush, makes for spooky listen. Opening gambit "I Would Like" draws an obtuse French folk sample from the faint crackle of a needle on vinyl, before embellishing the cut with a creepily time stretched children’s choir, which joins the chorus from the afterlife. These pencilled outlines are soon allowed more colour, bringing the kids back from the dead to gambol in a playground populated with crisp beats and fuzzy bass. Primarily instrumental cuts follow, jittery glitched beats emerging from heat hazed ambience and twelve tog bass sitting alongside the beat driven electronics occupied by Autechre in their Bass Cadet period. Those pesky undead are not wholly kept at bay however, returning occasionally via film dialogue which crawls through heat hazed ambience with messages from beyond the grave. - Clash |
