Pedro (a.k.a. England's James Rutledge) counts many scene heavyweights among his fans (Thom Yorke, Danger Mouse, Kevin Shields), but chances are you haven't heard of him. Your bad: Pedro has some seriously advanced skills. You, Me & Everyone delivers a punchier sound and more dynamic rhythms than its self-titled 2003 predecessor (remastered and reissued in 2006). Pedro's new disc bears resemblances to fellow Brit Four Tet's deft convergence of organic and digital sound processing and ultra-vivid production techniques. A maximalist, Pedro piles on undulating marimbas, brash brass flourishes, clattering drums, kinetic cowbell hits, hypnotic keyboard pulsations and enough funk to prompt appreciative head nodding among Prefuse 73 fans. He keeps everything moving briskly and balances myriad exotic textures and genres with masterful dexterity. You, Me & Everyone is a magnificent mongrel of unlikely styles. - Alternative Press |
