Pedro, aka London-based James Rutledge, released his debut last year, traversing loose psychedelia to heavily-processed modernity, quite rightly meeting with acclaim. For this mini-album, the single Fear & Resilience is passed to a select few remixers for choice manipulation tactices. Standout is obviously the freeform rework by Four Tet, who expand it to just over 21 minutes, in no hurry to arrive at the staccato prog-rock jazz bursts that punctuate the long stretches of ambient noise. Elsewhere, Danger Mouse justifies some of the hype surrounding his Grey Album project with a fascinating and haunting hip-hop take; Prefuse 73 cuts it up to sound like a stuck cd with hyper-rhythm; and Cherrystones goes for the dancefloor using dramatic spy themes and booming drums. Both a handy introduction to Pedro and a neat filler until his next proper release. - Record Collector |
