Enter California based producer Alfred Weisburg-Roberts aka Daedelus with his fifth album, Exquiste Corpse, an expertly executed work of currently unchallenged originality. The complexity of this collection of tracks is astonishing in terms of sonic depth and the extraordinary thing is, that it all hangs together so neatly, despite the spectrum of sound-worlds explored. A hard album to describe, Exquiste Corpse marries perfectly the antique and at times very twee, sound of 1950's television, with juddering electro hip-hop beats to unhinged effect. Daedelus' palette is almost as far reaching as his appeal (apparently he's collaborating with West Coast funk weirdoes Sa Ra Creative Partners in the not too distant...), which explains the notable collaborations with the likes of MF Doom, Mike Ladd and Prefuse 73 (incidentally the last person to confuse me in this way), all of whom lend themselves well to the surreal world of Exquiste Corpse. If you are none the wiser - I am still at a loss to talk about this record in an intelligible fashion - just go out and buy it because that's the only way you're gonna know what I'm on about. The one thing that really stands out for me, is that this record invites you to hear something new every time you listen to it - and if that's not a good reason to buy it I dunno what is. - Badly Stitched |
