Okay, first of all, let's get something clear - cLOUDDEAD is not hip-hop. It isn't trip-hop. It isn't ambient, drum and bass, or spoken-word. It's all of the above, a stylistically schizophrenic collaborative effort between the three artists: Doseone, why?, and odd nosdam. If their pseudonyms aren't enough of an indication that weirdness has completely taken them over like a terminal virus, their music will literally speak for itself. With Ten, their sophomore release, a feeling of funky eeriness abounds. The music consists mainly of drumbeats and synths layered over instrument and incidental noise samples that have been skewered to the point of insanity. The vocals of Doseone and why? are synchronized in a perfect harmony, with both voices working simultaneously, separately or even finishing each others' phrases. The lyrics vary between the metaphorical, the surreal and the horrifying, depending on how closely you pay attention. While Ten virtually exudes musical genius, it's so inexorably abstract that it would be considered total nonsense if it wasn't for the absolute precision of its execution. This album may cause serious side-effects. Please use extreme caution when combining with drugs or alcohol. - Ghetto Blaster |
