|MH-204 So-Called Artists - Paint By Number Songs
So-Called Artists. Their full-length release, Paint By Number Songs features twelve tracks of biting emo-rap, alt-rock production and crisp turntablist work. The overall feel is dark, brooding, and aggressive, as Anticon emcees Sole and Alias tackle subjects ranging from the depression caused by signing their music away, to the perils of war. Weak drum presets are no where to be found as the production is handled by Alias and Dj Mayonnaise in their trademark goth-hop style. Paint By Number Songs has an edge unlike any other Mush release, and is one of the rare hip-hop full-lengths where all tracks are of equal caliber.
|Oh, hell yeah. Just cause it ain’t about being dope, that doesn’t mean its not strong medicine - AP / This is some of the most original, abstract, and yes, experimental hip-hop around - Impact Press / It’s now s**t - Your Flesh / Turn it up - Ammo City
|So-Called Artists are rambling and confused, neither of which are criticisms. Comprised of Sole, Alias and Dj Mayonnaise of Anticon - the promiscuous hip-hop collective who cite the likes of Radiohead, Hood and Third Eye Foundation as influences - state their aesthetic succinctly with the rap "The concept is, I have no idea." This lack of clarity is compelling. Sole and Alias are as likely to imagine themselves living on Neptune, soliciting demo tapes via meteorites, as they are to appropriate mundane complaints from a neighbor in their raps: "Practicing or playing at 3:30AM is just not appropriate," they assert, "Please tone it down / Definitely the bass."
