I think it may be fair to call Eat Sugar’s first full length ¡levántense! a party on a piece of plastic (or what ever your preferred format). I mean, just look how much fun that dancing naked girl is having. Don’t you wish you were having that much fun? The electro-punk band from Cincinnati really give it to ya good on the record, loading up with punchy vocals, crunchy bass riffs, and synthesizers straight out of a 50′s sci-fi flick. All of this is enough to make you want to get shoved into a crapped room with the band and 100 other sweaty, dancing people. This is the kind of record that makes you want to go out, buy a pawn shop synth with weirdest sound possible, and make music until someone has you evicted.
Some who have been following the band for a while will recognize a song or two like, for instance, “Clap Your Hands”, with it’s absolute raw energy, and it’s good to see those ole’ timey songs finally pressed to vynil (or what ever your preferred format). “Clap” is joined by other great jams like the spacey, funky sounds of “Shadowside” and the in your face drums of “Standing Still”, which gives you sort of an idea of how completely cool this album is. Many of the songs on the album make me wish that I had a car complete with $5k stereo system just so that I could harass the neighborhood and blow out the subwoofers. “Parasite” would be prefect for this with “The Empty Set” in a close second and maybe “Dry” third. Actually just pick any of the songs on the record and press play. It all holds together, there’s nothing out of place, and all of it is as over the top and as funky as Boosty Collins before he opened up that tapas restaurant (Okay maybe that is hyperbole). - ScoliosisRacoon |
