Fisk industries' sound and approach is far from being pretentious: simple and straightforward electronica to be enjoyed, hummed and danced to at ease, no brainteasers involved. Talk about originality. I smile, put the CD in while looking at the front cover which reminds me of a scene from (UK video artist) Steve McQueen's video "Carribean's Leap": a clear blue sky with what seems to be a man falling down. Yet the similarity had only been a mere imagination of mine (Fisk Ind. didn't even know about the video!): it is a seagull in the Isle of White's sky, a southern destination visual artist Mat Ranson discovered on a weekend escape from London and decided to name his first EP after it (and invite us to join him by inserting his vacation route!). "We Saw Orion" kicks things off with a deja vu indian input leaving me sceptical on the album's link with the southern island. Yet, from the 59th second on, floating drum beats fade the Indian voice away opening the path to a new soothing landscape. Ambience and melodic rhythms merge sounds to take over and close-off the asian prelude. By then, you wonder what to expect next although the conglomerate Fisk Industries knows where it is taking you: a ludic and harmonious ride. The second track slowly unreveals the beautiful sound at the heart of the remaining tracks of this first EP and by "Can't Breathe" one hardly manages not to dance to the rhythm (I am following the beat while writing these lines and still havent stopped). It is difficult to avoid going back to early Warp sounds (Black Dog/Plaid, BOC) due to its slow beat-driven movement. The structure does amalgamate an array of beautiful beats making the entire listening experience simply delightfully enjoyable... A strongly recommended EP if you want a rhythmical (good) mood to take over your day. - Sonomu |
