A bastion of Mush Records' production core for several years, LA's Matthew Alsberg (aka Antimc) has made a business of being an Angelino first and a hip-hop producer second. His production credits span canyons from prog rock to glitch pop, but all link local acts. The piece de resistance was a mix tape of L.A. hair metal, punk, and hip-hop released on a well-known mix blog. His new record is a compendium of these past explorations and then some. Both instrumental and vocal cuts feature vintage Casio riffs, world beat, jazz, drum 'n' bass, and other divergent fashions. His fixation in these styles is motion, and he spreads it wildly over beats that can best be described as modified techno, though unlike club dance mixes, his tempos and styles continually shift. The opening track alone finds logical segues from brushed jazzy melodica to prog rock vamping. The cuts Antimc lays down for rhyming guests are where the real gusto lies, despite his hater moniker. When paired with spitfire MCs like Busdriver and Cadence Weapon, their combination takes surprising and innovative turns at each time change, self animated objects d'art. Bouncing melodies around breakneck beats, Antimc is keen and edgy, perspiring the alpha wolf musk of Rammelizee and sending satellite guides to circle Bambaataa's Planet Rock. - Signal To Noise |
