S.E.V.A. (Spirit Evolves via Awareness) is the production duo of Matthew Fowler and Dahvin Bugas, aka Mumbles and Gone Beyond. These two have turned out an album that draws on numerous cross genre influences. Billed as hip-hop with world and spiritual elements, I struggled to find the hip-hop. Largely instrumental, jazz inspired compositions are occasionally accompanied by spoken word samples and prose from prominent spiritual leaders. Tabla and percussion are woven over solid beats, rich instrumentation and a healthy dose of Indian mysticism. The abstract jazz opener features a short discourse on "Spirit Evolution" by Swami Akshara. Layered frenetic percussion and turntablism from Sanjay Schmidt on "Event Horizon" conjure the theme to a Bombay cop show. Sleepy beats, harp and melodic guitar soothe on "Suspended Animation." American born swami Gangaji delivers a brief treatise on spiritual presence on "Sun Shining/Eclipsed" accompanied by treated guitars and jazzy drums. "Love and Devotion" is a highlight. Gentle guitar melodies and scratchy electronics are laid over hypnotic and loose drums. S.E.V.A. achieve a layered live sound with electronics that are subtle and carefully integrated. The mystic samples and readings may not be your bag but they complement and characterise this unique sound. - 3D World |
