I have been waiting a while to write about Busdriver; trying to soak him all in, understand his world. I’ve given up. Busdriver is one of these rare talents that will probably go virtually unknown, never achieving massive commercial success. I think he realizes this, and frankly doesn’t give a shit. He is such a fucking incredible emcee that he could pull off whatever he wanted to, but he chooses to do this. Every good review should make some sense, provide some clarity for why you should go buy the artist’s music. I am sorry to say that this review will not do that at all, if anything I might confuse you. This guy Busdriver is the Frank Zappa of hip-hop. He is creating something so good, yet so bizarre that we will not ever completely get it. This is a good thing. So take this for what it’s worth, and understand that I don’t completely get it. Busdriver records are a collage of hip-hop, jazz, spoken-word, and a bizarre imagination. His newest offering “Fear of A Black Tangent” is (I believe) a concept record about being a musician and all the shit that goes with it, from guest list, to tours he covers it all. I’ve done it and it sucks, and Busdriver is here to tell everyone about it so I don’t have to. The title of the record is a play on Public Enemy’s “Fear of A Black Planet”. Why I don’t know? I need an interview, Busdriver if your reading this email me I've got questions. I hope Questlove or Black Thought get their hands on this record, because the okayplayer crowd would dig this shit. Or maybe Chappelle can bring Busdriver on the show, he seems to be doing as much for hip-hop as anyone. Jay-Z, Kanye can any of you hear me? Listen to Busdriver please. - Earfood |
