LA based electronic twiddler-cum-hip-hop producer Daedelus has remixed and revamped his recent release, The Weather, which featured emcees Busdriver and Radioinactive, into the space age sound cocktail that is Rethinking the Weather. This album is serious in its playfulness, regardless of its context as a remix album. Elements of hip-hop, lounge, exotica, downbeat, tropical, French pop and drum and bass are all present here. Highlights include the sing-song chorus ("Slightly cloudy with an increased chance of rain") of "Chorus, Verse, Chorus" with its warm acid bass, skittering drums, and the Bacharach in Paris pop of "Going Unsteady," which contrasts nicely with its subtle scratches and light jungle breaks. Roger Troutman's influence can be heard in "Robotic Girls Are Hard" as phased vocal funk clips invade the premises over trebly old school style beats. And Daedelus isn't afraid to mine his crates of old children's records, as in the smiley yet sinister "Name Game." Daedelus' style is so intriguing because his use of kitsch and cheese turns his obvious love and respect for hip-hop on its ass. If his style gets scattered at times, it is all in the name of flipping over conventions of electronic music and that is something to be admired. - Junk Media |
