Reaching Quiet present their art-school-dropout perspective on their vast, thirty-track collection of abstractions In the Shadow of the Living Room, recorded in their bedrooms at their parent's houses. why? and odd nosdam (2/3rds of cLOUDDEAD) share in providing voices, samples, and the occasional musical instrument to the random cacophony of styles, from carnivalesque organ to almost loungy. The misfit lyrics add a layer of fun to the noise, but the depth of meaning runs deeper. An examination of the lyrics reveal such gems as, "I've been conditioned to believe, that human beings have been conditioned to believ,e there's beauty in symmetry," and, "When they find us crashed in the Atlantic, floating there from our headphone umbilicals / Let it be known that I was listening to channel 4: Wynton Marsalis / Not Ricky Martin on channel 9 /Not the Fresh Prince on channel 2." The girth of this album is difficult to wrap your brain around, but the clever samples and music wrapped around them will keep you listening, despite the confusion and cynicism you'll feel. All in all, nosdam and why? are a well-oiled machine, united in their affront to year 2000 haircuts, dead-minded conformists, and the mass brainwashing of television viewers, society's minions. - Distortion |
