Odd Nosdam's reissued limited edition Plan 9: Meat Your Hypnotist will have some people running for the hills. This 55 track mush (originally put out by Mush) record was originally made on a Dr. Sample, an ancient Tascam 8-track, and an almost broken Teac cassette deck. Put out on hand made cassettes and distributed entirely through internet tape trading, this example of minimalistic production and dirty recording processes sparked Odd Nosdam's career by catching the ear of Anticon artists Doseone and why? (later with Nosdam the trio would form cLOUDEAD.) Every hiss and pop from the original tape has been kept on the reissue to show the genius behind some of Nosdam's insane tactics of sounds, samples, and beats. Most of the tracks are under a minute long, so the record flows easily from song (if they are really songs) to song. Critics argue that it's not real music, but rather an electronic fiasco where Nosdam simply (excuse my French) craps on his equipment and makes noise come out. With Nosdam's later releases (Burner and No More Wig For Ohio) and his production on many Anticon albums, it was easy to see the evolution from Plan 9 and it finally made sense as to why he was making music the way he was. This debut is really for open-minded people only, sadly, as most will dismiss the odd (pun intended) incoherence of Nosdam's recording techniques. If you really don't have the patience to listen to a minute long track of otherwordly samples, both clever and innovative, you have to appreciate where Nosdam is coming from. He helped pioneer some of Anticon's best albums and is one of the first, and most underrated, producers to produce the way he does. - Amp Camp |
