When Pittsburgh’s Ennui started out a few years back, it was as a four-piece playing energetic synth-rock. Eventually, the lineup was eventually whittled down to the twosome of multi-instrumentalist Sam McUmber and producer/principal songwriter Jim Doutrich. Following the release of 2011’s more eclectic Formation of Tides, Doutrich decided to go it alone, holing up in his home studio to experiment with dreamier, more atmospheric sounds. The result is Ennui’s latest album, Telepathic Beat.
In anticipation, Doutrich has unveiled the album’s lead single, “Circles”. The track captures the lazy, romanticized days of summer with pensive synthesizer loops and heartbeat drums. Between the glossy hooks, Doutrich finds room to get weird with distorted and psychedelic synth flourishes. His effected vocals feel somewhat reminiscent of Washed Out, creating a sense of worldly detachment as he repeats, “Turn away, drift apart/Don’t go back to the start”. It’s the ideal soundtrack for those serene nights at the beach, ones spent hoping the evening will never end. - Consequence of Sound |
