US-based electronic duo Andrew Hamlet and Mat Jones first emerged under their Pressed And alias with last year’s Imbue Up EP, and this follow-up download-only EP Hyper Thistle offers up five new tracks that see them continuing to build their compositions around shimmering, post-chillwave influences. Opening track ‘Tusk In The Rock Flowers’ offers up the one real rhythmically extrovert moment here as furiously rattling junglist breakbeats provide a curious counterpart to fuzzed out guitar loops and a rapid-fire rush of weirdly pitchshifted vocal tones, before ‘Andross To Aneki’ drops things into more contemplative waters as chiming, almost shoegaze guitars ripple out over a backdrop of slow, fluttering beats and vocal chorus hooks tweaked to the point of androgyny. ‘Komuso Flutter Kick IV’ meanwhile sees a crunching hiphop pulse locking into place against contorted bass buzzes and angelic rippling vocal elements in what’s easily the most captivating moment here, the sweeter harmonics nicely counterbalancing the moodier shades as almost soul-informed organ tones swell against the spidery hi-hats towards the end. Blissful yet unpredictable stuff that evades easy categorisation. - Cyclic Defrost |
